MSS

Symbology you don't have to build. The engine inside other command systems — on the desktop, on the server, in the browser.

MSS — a grid of military unit symbols, one selected

MSS — the Military Symbol Service — is the engine inside other command systems. Integrate it once and your C2 or GIS product renders, edits and searches military symbology to standard, from day one.

Every symbol. One engine.

  • MIL-STD-2525C — the complete symbol set and its tactical graphics
  • Swiss Armed Forces — Regl. 52.002.03 / 04 and further Swiss regulations, including civil and naval symbols
  • Police and traffic — Führung im Polizeieinsatz, Regl. V+T and TCS road signage
  • NATO exchange — symbols travel to and from NATO Vector Graphics (NVG)

More than 3,500 symbols and tactical graphics, maintained and released continuously since 2011.

Built in where you need it

  • On the desktop. An in-process COM server for Win32 and Win64 — callable from C++, C#, Java, Delphi, VB.NET, even Excel and PowerShell. Registration-free deployment and a .NET interop assembly included.
  • On the server. The MSS Web Service exposes the same engine over REST/JSON or SOAP — 80 methods with Swagger documentation. No Delphi on the client, ever.
  • In the browser. Angular web components for symbol search, gallery and editor — demonstrated on OpenLayers, Leaflet, Cesium, ArcGIS, MapLibre and deck.gl.

What integrators get

  • Fifteen characters, not an image. Symbols travel as compact SymbolStrings — a full operational picture crosses system boundaries in kilobytes.
  • Render anything. 1-point and n-point symbols to SVG, PNG, EMF, XAML, JPEG, BMP or ICO, or straight to a device context.
  • Edit to the rules. Symbol editor, modifier rules and the full symbol hierarchy — so users can only build valid symbols.
  • Convert. MilX to KML and NVG, up- and downgrade between MilX versions.
  • Extend. Add national or product-specific symbols and display rules without touching the core.

Fielded

More than 50 defence customers and integrators build on MSS. We don’t name them.

See it. Then build it in.

symbol.army and map.army both run on MSS. To evaluate it for your system, talk to an engineer.
